A team consisting of a service coordinator, a developmental specialist and a speech therapist or motor therapist will come to your home or your child’s daycare.
The team is friendly and supportive. They will do their best to make you and your child feel comfortable and relaxed. One of the therapists will play with your infant or child on the floor. They use toys to encourage your child to engage with them, move, play, and talk. The team will also ask to watch your child have a snack, especially if there is a feeding concern. While your child is playing, the other team members will be typing up a report of all of your child’s skills as well as any concerns that you may have. In addition, they will be filling out a standardized assessment to help them to determine if your child is eligible for services. You are an integral part of the team. As the parent, you know your child better than anyone. You will help the team to understand your child’s unique skills. You can expect the entire evaluation process to last approximately 2 hours.
